Question

I am 41 years old, have type 1 diabetes, and I work out 3-4 times each week (cardio and lifting weights). I have always worked out and feel that I am in decent shape. I weigh 165 pounds and would like to lose about 15 pounds.

How much protein should I be eating each day? I know that too much protein is not good for your kidneys. I plan to stay complication-free, if I have a say, and do not want to over-stress my body. I don't have any signs of kidney disease now and would like to keep it that way.

Answer

Please set up an appointment with a Registered Dietitian, who is also a Certified Diabetes Educator, to discuss your individualized meal plan and protein needs. Not knowing your blood glucose levels, duration of diabetes, and other lab studies, makes it difficult to predict exactly what you should be eating from a protein standpoint.
