Question

I am 44 years old and have had type 2 diabetes for less than a year which I try to control with diet and exercise. I usually do not eat potatoes and have veggies with most meals, but I splurged and ate potato soup and fruit for lunch. One hour later my blood sugar as 130 mg/dL [7.2 mmol/L], and two hours later it was 109 mg/dL [6.1 mmol/L]. Is this too high?

Answer

These blood glucose readings are well within normal blood glucose excursions following a meal. I am more concerned that you are not consuming enough carbohydrates and are eliminating certain vegetables from meals. Consulting a dietitian who can direct you on the correct amount of carbohydrate per meal and show you how to translate that into potatoes or fruit or other carbohydrates, might be a good lesson for you.
