Question
My daughter was recently
diagnosed with type 1
diabetes.
She is a certified diver and
is interested in resuming diving. Do you have any current information on scuba divers with diabetes such as restrictions, risk, protocols, etc.?
Answer
There is some information (although admittedly dated) at
diving with diabetes.
There's also a
medical form
[PDF file]
on-line (which is quite unclear about diabetes), which states:
With the exception of diabetes mellitus, states of altered hormonal
or metabolic function should be assessed according to their
impact on the individual's ability to tolerate the moderate exercise
requirement and environmental stress of sport diving.
I tried googling padi.com for diabetes,
and didn't find much either, but it looks like they're willing to insure
people with diabetes to travel.
I'd suggest she contact PADI directly
for any information they might have.
Best wishes to your daughter!
