Question
I have
type 1
diabetes,
I am taking oral medication, and my doctor was
telling me about
Byetta.
If I were to start taking this medication, is it a lifelong medication, or would I be able to go off of it once my
levels were under control and the weight I have to lose is lost? I am not a fan of injecting myself, as I hate needles, but if this
would help me and I knew that it was not going to be for the rest of
my life, I might consider it.
Answer
This is an interesting question, one I too have pondered, and honestly I
don't think anyone knows the answer. However, but I suspect that as we gain more
information these kinds of questions can be more easily answered.
Honestly the injection is so minor. I feel so much better, look and feel so good that it is almost a moot point for me. In addition, with the once a week
injection on the horizon, if I needed to continue it for the rest of my life it would not bother me. I suspect though that if you achieved weight loss
goals and could maintain your glucoses on another medication that you might
could go off it but if the benefits of this drug hold true you may not want
to do that.
