Question

I am a 41 year old female who has had diabetes for about a year. I am taking 30 mg. of Actos along with 12 units of Lantus, and I have gone from a size 16 to a size 22. Even though I eat healthy and exercise lightly, I keep putting on weight. Is this a normal reaction? What can I do about this weight gain?

Answer

I'm not certain what the reason is for your weight gain. People with type 2 diabetes often do gain weight (especially those on insulin) when their caloric intake exceeds the amount burned.

My first thought would be to see a Registered Dietitian well versed in diabetes. Such an individual can assist you in developing a meal plan consistent with your lifestyle and targeted at meeting both weight and blood sugar goals. There is also a new medication available called Byetta which has been shown to be effective in fostering weight loss. You should discuss this with your physician and see if this treatment might be appropriate for you.
