Question

Is there a good reason for a person with type 1 diabetes to take Lovastatin?

Answer

Yes.

Statins have been shown to cut the risk of heart disease in people with diabetes even if they have normal cholesterol levels and no evidence of heart disease. (See the discussion about the the heart protection study.) Of course, any prescription drug has side effects, so the decision for each individual will depend on their unique situation.
