Question

I am 68 years old and have had type 2 diabetes for more than twenty years. Because metformin caused late onset diarrhea and was not controlling my sugars, my doctor put me on Prandin before meals and 40 units of Lantus at bedtime.Shortly after I started these new medications, I began a good diet and exercise program, but I have gained 10 pounds. This has made me physically very uncomfortable. I am serious about losing weight and am concerned that the weight gain is from my meds. Any ideas?

Answer

Of all the oral medications the only one that is not known to cause weight gain is metformin. Since you are already on injections you may want to consider the new medication called Byetta either as a stand alone or in conjuction with your current meds. You need to have a good understanding and be prepared to have a discussion with your diabetes team.

Another thought is that you have developed more muscle because of your exercise program, and muscle tissue weighs more that fat. You need to consult with your diabetes team to develop a plan that will meet ALL your goals. If you are not currently being follwed by a team of specialists, it may be time to ask for a referral.

And you definitely should review your meal plan with a diabetes dietitian.
