When are the best times to check your blood sugar levels?

March 04, 2008

Sometimes people wonder when it would be "best" to check the blood sugar level. There isn't any single best time, but here are some suggestions.

Times to check your blood sugar levels

  1. Before meals.
  2. At bedtime.
  3. If you think you are having low sugar symptoms.
  4. If anyone thinks you are having low sugar symptoms.
  5. About one-and-a-half hours after eating.
  6. At about 3:00 AM.
  7. If you are ill. (Be sure to check several times daily; if the results are higher than usual, call for advice!)
  8. Before driving an automobile or operating other dangerous machinery.
  9. Both immediately before, and after, active exercise. (Also, if you have the chance, check an hour before the exercise).
  10. For at least 3 days after any doctor changes any of your medications.
  11. At least 4 times a day during hospitalizations.
  12. If you are curious.
